What is it?
For years now, the scientific community has recognized the benefits of L-leucine as a branched chain amino acid (BCAA) and its benefits related to muscle building and recovery. Clinical studies have shown l-leucine to exert an anti-catabolic and anabolic effect on protein metabolism in skeletal muscle This is important for athletes and every day active people alike. Because leucine so powerfully stimulates muscle protein synthesis, some researchers have suggested leucine supplementation to combat sarcopenia or age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass.
The main highlights of L-leucine include
- Increased anabolism (the potential for creating new muscle)
- Reduced muscle damage
- Improved athletic performance
- Improved muscle recovery
Aging, physical activity, stress, and work all put a strain on our skeletal muscle system. This is where leucine comes in. Leucine works to prevent the metabolism of skeletal muscle via its anti-catabolic properties. This PRESERVES our lean muscle. But the benefits do not stop there. Leucine has been show to be the strongest amino acid for the stimulation of protein synthesis. This means that leucine can actually promote lean muscle GAIN, which we as athletes or even aging adults is what we want. We always want to be maintaining or advancing our lean muscle weight. The benefits to this are endless. Another note in regards to leucine is that being a BCAA, leucine is also and essential amino acid. This means that humans must consume leucine daily as the body cannot manufacture it. When we do not consume enough protein in general, we cannot consume enough leucine. BCAAs comprise 33% of all skeletal muscle. Are you vegan/vegetarian? Do you find yourself not eating as much as you should due to your busy schedule? Chances are HIGH that you are not getting enough BCAAs especially L-leucine.
You can also find this product in TOTAL AMINO formulation if you are looking for a more complete amino acid formula.
